Like many parts of the hospitality sector, pubs are facing another tough year in 2010. With pub closures running at 39 per week, we are by no means out of recession, and beer sales in pubs continue to decline. With pubs at the heart of the UK economy, a robust recovery for the sector is crucial for Britain plc, as well as for our licensees.  We have huge potential to help lead the country back to economic growth.

Other challenges remain, with the threat of higher taxation, an increasing regulatory burden through the Government’s new Mandatory Code on Alcohol Sales, and the threat of further regulation always round the corner. However, with over 52,000 pubs, we still have a very vibrant sector, and pubs that innovate will be best placed to weather the storm and build their business. With so many leisure options out there, focusing on hospitality and the customer will be key, and with pubs now selling more meals than Britain’s restaurants, a good food offering has never been more important.

We need to persuade the Government of the need for policies that support pubs as a vital part of local life, and as the natural home of responsible drinking. All pubs have a role to play in promoting this message, and with a new Parliament about to be elected, now has never been a better time for pubs to get this message across at a local level to those that will shape our industry in the years to come. This will make a real difference.
