Britain's beer and pub sector generated £37.8bn for the UK economy in 2025 and supported almost 1m jobs, according to new analysis commissioned by the British Beer and Pub Association. The research, carried out by Oxford Economics, found the sector also contributed £16.8bn in tax and generated an estimated £2.2bn in net capital investment. The BBPA said the findings demonstrated the sector's economic impact across every region, with each region generating an average of £3.2bn in GVA and supporting an average of 81,800 jobs. Pubs alone generated £29.8bn in GVA, supporting 849,600 jobs and £17.4bn in wages, the Morning Advertiser reports.
Valiant Pub Company, the UK operator of community-focused pubs, has recorded a 45% increase in revenue for the financial year ended 29 March 2026, Pub & Bar reports. Turnover has risen to £42.9m, with pub-level EBITDA up 56% to £8.6m. Driven by continued expansion and strategic investment, the estate now stands at 103 pubs. Founded in 2021 by Gerry Carroll and Mark McGinty, Valiant has evolved from a wet-led operator into a diversified pub business spanning traditional locals, food-led pubs and larger, destination venues offering restaurants and accommodation. With a pipeline of opportunities and funding in place, Valiant says it is well positioned to continue growing at pace.
Whitbread has bought two hotels, one in Bristol and one in Plymouth, highlighting the growing significance of acquisitions in its expansion strategy. Historically the company has placed a great deal of importance on development but in a challenging construction market it is finding other ways to grow. The hotels will add 292 bedrooms to the brand's UK network - with more than half of the rooms set to open as Premier Inn bedrooms at the beginning of November. The FTSE100 hospitality business acquired the two purpose-built hotels in Plymouth and Bristol's Cabot Circus freehold from Future Inns, a Canadian-based hotel company, for an undisclosed sum, Hospitality Investor reports.
Dishoom's turnover almost hit £160m in 2025, the group's latest accounts reveal, Restaurant Online reports. The Indian restaurant group saw turnover rise by 16%, from £137m to £159.4m for the year ended 28 December 2025, driven by a strong performance in its established restaurants and the full-year contribution of two existing sites opened in 2024 and a further two in 2025. Profit before tax decreased to £4.2m from £10.1m, which the company says was mainly due to exceptional costs related to the investment in the group by its partner, investment firm L Catterton. Adjusted EBITDA for the year was £22m, up from £18.6m the year before, with gross profit margin rising from 37% to 37.4%. In its financial report, the business says it continued to experience volume growth and increased efficiency due to more stable teams and a reduced team turnover.
BrewDog is being given a fresh start under new ownership, with US drinks group Tilray Brands committing more than £50m to rebuilding the Scottish craft brewer. Tilray acquired BrewDog's brand, breweries and other assets for £33m in March after the business entered administration following years of losses and mounting financial and reputational problems. Irwin Simon, chief executive of Tilray, has called on customers to give the brand another chance as the company attempts to draw a line under BrewDog's troubled recent history. The investment is being directed towards the brewery, pubs, employees and the wider business, with Tilray also seeking to restore confidence in the quality of BrewDog's beers, Food Service Equipment Journal reports.
Amber Taverns is continuing its expansion into the south of England with a seven-figure investment in its first Wiltshire pub. Cooper & Co opened in Salisbury on 5 October, following a transformation of an old Pizza Hut site on Blue Boar Row. The pub company has turned the venue into a value-led pub combining drinks, sport and competitive socialising, reports Pub & Bar. The refurb has seen the relocation of staircases and creation of a new bar, cellar, trading areas, manager's accommodation and beer garden. A significant AV installation sits at the heart of the sports offer, while the investment has also created a dedicated private karaoke room, interactive darts and photobooth.
It was only a matter of time, but padel has finally found its way into the pub industry, adding another competitive socialising option into the sector, reports Pub & Bar. The Black Horse in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, has added two courts to its venue via its new model Padel at the Pub.
